Being an Exchange Student in Turin(1)
Yixin Liu
Although I have been here for just a couple of days, I have experienced many things and have many feelings.
On the second day we arrived in Turin, we called Jennifer who is the student dean of IUC(International University College of Turin)where we study in and she asked someone to arrange the accommodation for us in Olympic Village where Turin hold the 20th Olympic Games in winter. It takes 20 minutes to go to IUC by bus and the living conditions here is very good. IUC rent the apartments for us and the students from different countries live in the building together. The ones living on the same floor share a kitchen and when it is time for having dinner, you can smell dishes from all over the world. After the dinner, we usually sit together to talk for a while.
We have already had classes since 20th. IUC is in the center of the city and I think it is a place full of energy because the professors and the other people working here are very kind and friendly and they try to help the students at aspects of living or studying. The exchanging project of us is studying the course for MSc(Master of Sciences in Comparative Law Economics and Finance). IUC has invited many famous professors to teach us such like Luca Anderlini who teaches Economic Intuitions of Capitalism and graduated from Cambridge UK). The main way of teaching is giving us lectures, and in the classes the students from different countries and knowledge background express their own ideas from many angles. I feel many pressures in studying: One is the language obstacle. Although I has passed CET-6 and IELITS in China, it is still hard to understand what the professor teach sometimes for the accent of some of them and there are also many terms in the lectures. The other problem is created by the courses themselves of Msc, because what we need to learn is not just about law, but also about finance and economics, and not only the domestic law but also the law of different parts of the world which is a big challenge for us. After finishing the classes at the end of a day, I felt tired but also need to read materials to compensate for the lack of listening English. But everything is hard at the beginning, and I hope after spending more time on studying, I will be adapt to all of this. It is a challenge but also can make us get much from it.
It is amazing to live here and students can organize some activities and there will be an International Football Game next Monday. I think it maybe different to play football here where the famous football club Juventus is in. In our spare time, we walk around this city and talk with the local people who are very kind and if you ask them the way to some place, they will show you with their body language if they can’t speak English and even take you there sometimes.
Turin is a beautiful city with long history, and in the downtown, there are many wide streets and beautiful squares .It has the blocks with baroque style built by Savoia family who governed Italy in 17th century. When I walk in the blocks, just feel like living far from modern society. There are also some churches, museums and theaters which show the belief, history and culture of this city.
In my opinion, studying abroad and to know different culture and the way of thinking are precious experiences in my life. The most important thing is you may learn how to get along with other people because it doesn’t like when we are in China where we are familiar with the surroundings and can communicate with our mother tongue. We should deal with all the problems and try to get what we want by ourselves. We are using English with different people and trying to cooperate with them.
Thank our university to give us such kind of platform and also need to say thanks to my tutor Mr.Liu Guanghua who gave me a kind of awareness which is important for me to have courage to go abroad. I also hope you guys can have such awareness and prepare for it such like taking the exam of IELITS and TOEFL and try to get the chance our university supply.
Such like Monk Tang going to west world, I also come here to find something which is knowledge, or more exactly, a kind of thought which can make my mind open and find the position of my life that make me keeping work hard for…
MSc(Master of Sciences in Comparative Law Economics and Finance)的课程,IUC聘请了一些有名的教授来给我们上课,这学期教我们Economic Institions of Capitalism的Luca Anderlini教授就毕业于英国剑桥。
Brainstorming
Being an Exchange Student in Turin (2)
Yixin Liu
Last week, IUC held a “Brainstorming” seminar chaired by Professor Ugo Mattei, during which, faculty members and students from the IUC “Research Group on Global Financial Markets” took a good opportunity to present their research results. At the seminar, everybody expressed their views and exchanged ideas freely, new sparks of thoughts burst out now and then together with collisions and conflicts between different minds, although more than one time we felt the tense atmosphere of debate clearly and strongly, yet it was friendly all the way from start till finish. And the brainstorming was so fierce that it lasted for 7 hours from 10:00 in the morning to 17:00 in the afternoon. I guess that’s the reason why it is called “Brainstorming”. Even now, when recalling back, I can still remember each amazing moment happened on that day clearly.
Inspired by this seminar and its name, I came up with the idea of writing my 2nd essay entitled “Brainstorming” about exchange life here at IUC in Turin.
I think it has been five months since I wrote my 1st essay about life of being an exchange student here. During the past five months, the dense academic atmosphere of IUC has drawn a much bigger circle for me within which I could get more knowledge that I had no idea of before. I feel like having been rolled into a strong “knowledge storm”. Hence, in this small essay I would like to talk something about the STORM I experienced in the past two semesters at this marvelous place.
Just as I’ve mentioned before in the 1st essay, IUC is an international college in which the main courses are concerning interdisciplinary courses in Economics, Finance and Law. As an international college, one of its characteristics of internationalization is that professors working at IUC are from 14 countries from across the world. Thus, it is not hard to imagine that the “knowledge storm” could happen whenever, wherever. In the last two terms, I took three compulsory courses: Economic & Legal Institutions Foundations of Capitalism, Financial Instruments and Incentives & Regulations. Each course was arranged to be taught by two professors of Economics and Law respectively. Thus we could get a deeper and broader view through different eyes, different academic brains. For example, Prof. Anderlini revealed that the aim of trade was to get the Pareto Optimal from the angle of Economics, and further, Prof. Tom Herth introduced to us the two fundamental theorems of Welfare Economics and Coase Theorem with his special American humor on the grounds of Anderlini to find the balance between justice and efficiency; whereas Prof. Panailillo and Paolisa lectured us about the legal regulations and the rationale from angle of Law. Except for these compulsory courses, in the second term, IUC also offered 5 optional courses which could be chosen according to our own interests. In addition, there are three kinds of clinics open to all of us, in which many lawyers and entrepreneurs are invited to analyze some real cases and share their experience of management in a more practical way.
Knowledge storm is everywhere. The more I’ve learned, the more I realize I lack. As a LZU exchange member in the older generation, for those who are exploring the possibility of studying here, I think to know some basic knowledge about Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Finance, International Finance as well as Law will be very helpful for adapting to new life as early as possible.
