The Confucius Institute at AI-Farabi Kazakh National University

Background Information

The Confucius Institute at AI-Farabi Kazakh National University was founded upon its predecessor, the Chinese Language Center Jointly built by LZU in April 2002. In early 2005, the Chinese Language Center was brought into the plan of building Confucius Institute approved by its headquaters and Chinese National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. It was then renamed in March, 2007 with approval from the Cinese Language Council and inaugurated on February 23, 2009. In September, 2008, it set up HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) test centre.

Infrustructure

The Confucius Institute at AI-Farabi Kazakh National University is located in the largest city and finance center of central Asia—Alma-Ata. According to the institute rules and regulations, it combined the situation of Chinese education market in Kazakhstan with the practical situation of Chinese teaching, enjoying steady development in hardware construction, institution management, Chinese culture dissemination and Chinese teaching and playing an increasing role in publicizing the Chinese culture. Currently, the institute boasts 3 administrative offices, 4 classrooms, 1 pronounciation classroom, 1 computer room, 1 books and reference materials room and 1 conference room covering an area of 800 square meters.

Student Cultivation

The Chinese Language Center has been focused on the Chinese training and Chinese culture dissemination for local students, including elementary school students, middle school students and undergraduates, enterprise staff and other people since foundation. The current registrated students are mainly from Oriental School of Kazakh National University for Nationalities, Kazakh International Relations and Foreign Languages University, Abey National Normal University, Kazakh-Chinese Languages School, Kazakh Women’s Normal University and KIMEP. The number of annual registrated students reaches to around 400 with 500 students in total receiving special training or short-term training. In 2015, it held two HSK tests with around 800 examinees, which the passing rate reached to 80 percent. There are 62 students obtain the Confucius Institute Scholarship, then going to the higher university of China to get further sudy. Moreover, more than 100 culture dissemination activities were held, attracting over 1,000 local civilians to attend and experience.

Awards

In April, 2017, the Confucius Institute at AI-Farabi Kazakh National University was awarded by the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Alma-Ata for its great contribution to the education, culture communication and friendship between China and Kazakh over ten years.
